Desperate. Cheats.
By Tom | August 22, 2007
You have to hand it to ‘em. Bush, Cheney & Co. really want to stay in Iraq, no matter what. The desperation is palpable.
It’s not bad enough we have a parade of Republican (and blue-dog Democratic) lawmakers running over to Iraq for anywhere from 14 hours to a couple of days, only to return with a smile and a “things are going better than we thought” sound byte. Or we have “scholars” getting the real scoop from an eight-day dog & pony show returning with a smile and a “things are going better than we thought” sound byte. Or we have Gen. Petraeus and Amb. Crocker marching before Congress with a smile and a “things are going better than we thought” sound byte.
Now, they’re calling in the ready reserve of flackery, led by Ari Fleischer, to run a bunch of disingenuous commercials in 20 states in the name of “Freedom’s Watch” to drum up “grassroots” support for the war in Iraq. Soldiers and their families, invoking 9/11 no less, urging folks to call Congress and tell them to support Bush and his misbegotten war.
But even then, they have to cheat. Turns out the toll-free number viewers are urged to call leads not to a Congressional switchboard, but a call-center, where callers first have to take a short survey. If you pass, you get transferred to your legislator. Nice.
